Fremd-Körper – Die Filme von Claire Denis

Das Arsenal widmet Claire Denis im Oktober eine komplette Retrospektive, die neben den Spiel- und Dokumentarfilmen auch ihre kaum bekannten kurzen Arbeiten umfasst.

Claire Denis' Interesse für Afrika und die Auswirkungen des Kolonialismus ist biografisch begründet. 1948 als Tochter eines Kolonialbeamten geboren, wuchs sie in verschiedenen afrikanischen Ländern auf. Ende der 1960er Jahre ging sie an die Pariser Filmhochschule IDHEC, nach Abschluss ihres Studiums (1972) arbeitete sie als Regieassistentin, u. a. bei Dušan Makavejev, Costa-Gavras, Jacques Rivette, Jim Jarmusch und Wim Wenders.

Das Kino von Claire Denis verhandelt immer wieder Erfahrungen des Fremdseins. In Afrika, in Paris, im Jura, in New York, in der Südsee. Es umkreist Figuren, die am Rande stehen, wortkarge Einzelgänger, Außenseiter, Neuankömmlinge, Heimatlose, Menschen, die sich nicht reibungslos anpassen – Fremde in vielerlei Hinsicht. Ihre Filme erforschen verschiedene Kodierungen von Fremdheit, die Grenze zwischen Eigenem und Fremdem in einer postkolonialen Welt. Doch werden die damit verbundenen Phänomene und Diskurse um Migration, Rassismus, Identitätspolitik, Abhängigkeitsverhältnisse und Überlebenskämpfe bei Claire Denis nie als Thema ausgestellt und plakativ formuliert, sondern sie sind den Körpern der Figuren, die sich in ihren Geschichten bewegen, immanent.
